Orientation

Spring Orientation Activities

The Erasmus Society would like you to feel at home here as soon as possible. Therefore we organise a series of activities together with the International Students' Association (ISA) during the first week of term to help you find your feet in York. The first set of activities will be held on Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 January, and are absolutely free to participate in. So if you are arriving in York this week or coming later on, feel free to get involved!

--- NEWSFLASH Weather forecasts: ---

As you will have noticed, the weather in the UK is pretty bad. No suprise there - it is the UK, so what did you expect? ;-) - but looking at the situation right now, the activities will continue as planned. However, if the weather deteriorates we might have to cancel on some of the off-campus activities. We will let you know about any possible further developments on the day itself.

The Welcome Lounge

The Welcome Lounge (WL) is located in Langwith college, room L/036 the main meeting point during the orientation activities. Between those times, you can pop in at any time - we'll make sure a staff member is present at all times to help you with your questions, queries and tours. If you want to come in to meet other new exchange students and have a cup of tea / coffee, that is possible as well!

How to get to L/036

Lecture Room L/036 is nice and easy to find. Start by following the signs leading you to The Courtyard, our Students' Union bar. When you stand in front of the main entrance to the bar, you are in a long corridor. Follow this corridor in the direction of Derwent College, and look out for room numbers. L/036 is located in this corridor, on the left hand side. We will also put signs up to guide you in the right direction. Good luck!

The activities:

Monday 11 January:

09.00-19.15: Welcome Lounge, Langwith room L/036. Open all day to help you with your inquiries and provide you with free coffee and tea.

09.00-13.00: During the morning, we've got one primary aim: to make sure you are settled down in your own room and get to know campus itself. To achieve this, we will help you with any problems you might bump into, provide small scale campus tours and help you to find the places you want to go to.

14.00 - 17.30: Treasure hunt in the city centre. This afternoon, we will give you the opportunity to explore the city of York in a rather unique way, namely a treasure hunt! Want to participate? Please make sure to be at the WL at 13.45, as we are! If you feel going to the centre, but if you don't want to participate in the treasure hunt, fair enough. Some members of staff will be around in the city centre as well to guide you to all the nice places and show you around.

Tip: bring your University of York student card with you, as it allows you to visit the Minster cathedral for free!

19.00 - 23.00: Social in The Courtyard, a great change to socialise with the other new students and the welcome team members to share your experiences so far. Already met up with your new housemates? Feel free to bring them as well!

Tuesday 12 January

09.30 - 13.00: International Office Orientation session for all visiting students. Vanbrugh college room V/045. Pleas do attend these activities, as they are the official university programme and give you some crucial information about studying in York.

13.00 - 18.00: Welcome Lounge: Once again, we want to invite you to our Welcome Lounge. If you haven't been able to go on a campus tour yet, need some help with shopping or if there is anything else, the Welcome Team is there to help you!

16.15: Guided shopping trip to Morrisons and Sainsburys, giving you the possibility to seriously stock up on groceries and kitchen utensils. Alternatively, the Erasmus Society gives you to change to borrow some of these items. For an overview, please look here.

19.00 - 23.30: Erasmus Society Social. Want to meet up with some of the other (exchange) students? The Erasmus Society organises Welcome (back!), a social all students can attend. If you want to hear a little bit more about student life in York, this is the opportunity to find out!
